Woodstock residents convicted of animal cruelty
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Woodstock, ON (August 9, 2018) – Two Woodstock residents have been found guilty of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act following an investigation relating to dogs in their care.
On February 20, 2018, an Ontario SPCA officer responded to a concern about the welfare of animals at a home in Woodstock. During the course of the investigation, the officer discovered a number of animals, including two dogs which were living in very unsanitary conditions with poor air quality and many piles of feces on the floor, forcing the animals to walk through it.
Jay Lemieux, 43, and Donna Chambers, 59, were subsequently charged and pled guilty in Provincial Offences Court on August 2, 2018. They were each charged with one count of permitting distress and one count of unsanitary conditions under the Ontario SPCA Act. The Justice of the Peace placed conditions on Lemieux and Chambers; a three year prohibition from owning or caring for animals (two dogs remaining in their care are exempt) as well as unannounced quarterly inspections of their residence, whereby any additional animals found, may be seized.
“Choosing to have an animal in your life comes with the legal responsibility of providing appropriate and humane care,” says Carol Vanderheide, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you find yourself in a position where you cannot care for your animals, reach out to your local Animal Centre or Humane Society to discuss your options.”
To report animal cruelty, call the Ontario SPCA’s province-wide dispatch centre at 310-SPCA (7722).
